THIBODAUX, La. – No. 1 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will meet No. 5 New Orleans, while No. 2 NJIT takes on No. 6 UIW in tomorrow's semifinals at the 2025 Southland Men's Tennis Championship after terrific play on Thursday afternoon at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.
Match 1 – (1) Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 4, (8) Nicholls 0
It was no trouble for top-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as they rolled to a 4-0 victory over No. 8 Nicholls. After a dominant doubles point, Omar Suarez got singles started with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2 followed by a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 by Etienne Marty. Nicolas Trebuchet clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles to send the Islanders back to the semifinals.
Match 2 – (5) New Orleans 4, (5) UTRGV 1
No. 5 New Orleans pulled the upset over No. 4 UTRGV to advance to the semifinals. After splitting the first two doubles courts, Jay Temming and Joseph Townes earned a tight 7-6 (8-6) win at No. 2 to give UNO momentum. That carried over to a dominant 6-4, 6-0 win for Marc Mail over Player of the Year Sam Whitehead. Julian Franzmann took a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 3 single, though UTRGV responded with a point to cut it to 3-1. Townes put it away with 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 to send New Orleans forward.
Match 3 – (2) NJIT 4, (7) Lamar 1
Defending champion and No. 2 seed NJIT moved to the semifinals with a tough 4-1 win over No. 7 Lamar. After dominating the doubles point, the Highlanders had their hands full with a game Cardinal squad. Wil Jenkins earned a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 4, but Lamar responded with a point to cut it to 2-1. Soma Fukuhara took a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 5 to bring the Highlanders closed, while Pablo Ramos took it home at Court 1 with a thrilling 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4) to clinch the match.
Match 4 – (6) UIW 4, (3) Bryant 3
No. 6 UIW pulled the upset of the tournament thus far as they defeated No. 3 Bryant in a thriller. The Word jumped all over the Bulldogs, taking the doubles point and taking momentum into singles. Daniel Baquero of Bryant took the first singles point, but Alejandro Hernandez responded with a 6-2, 6-4 win at Court 2. Emilio Vila inched the Cardinals closer with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles, but Bryant got the next two points to even it at three apiece. Marcel Miralles finished it off at Court 3 with a three-set victory to clinch, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
