FRISCO, Texas — Nicholls State University’s Angelina Rispone, the University of Incarnate Word’s Montanna Matthews and Northwestern State University’s Audrey Marfia earned this week's Southland Women's Soccer Player of the Week awards, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Offensive Player of the Week: Angelina Rispone, Nicholls State University – So. – M – Baton Rouge, La. (St. Joseph’s Academy)
Rispone scored both of Nicholls’ goals in a 2-1 win over Stephen F. Austin on Thursday, both coming from outside the box. The sophomore found the back of the net in the 34
th and 37
th minutes, giving the Colonels a 2-0 first-half lead that they held on to for their second Southland win of the season. Rispone played all 90 minutes in both of Nicholls’ matches last week.
Defensive Player of the Week: Montanna Matthews, UIW – Jr. – D – Albury, Australia (Xavier)
Matthews helped the UIW defense pitch a shutout while also scoring a goal off a corner kick in a 3-0 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday, her second goal of the season and third of her career. The junior has played a key role in helping the Cardinals allow just one goal during their active three-game win streak, which includes consecutive shutouts.
Goalkeeper of the Week: Audrey Marfia, Northwestern State – Jr. – GK – Santa Clara, Calif. (Willow Glen)
Marfia stopped 14 of 15 shot attempts in a pair of victories for the Demons last week. Despite allowing an early goal, the junior made six saves to keep East Texas A&M at bay before Northwestern State’s offense scored three unanswered tallies to put the game away. She then made eight saves in her second shutout of the season at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
