FRISCO, Texas – Esteban Gonzalez of UTRGV and Matilda Samervong of Lamar have earned the season's first Southland Golfer of the Week awards, the conference office announced Thursday.
Men’s Golfer of the Week: Esteban Gonzalez, UTRGV – Sr. – Edinburg, Texas (McAllen Memorial High School)
Gonzalez is off to a fast start this fall, posting back-to-back record book performances and accumulating a 69.5 scoring average across six rounds at the JT Poston Invitational and Bayou City Collegiate. He finished in a tie for 21st at the JT Poston invitational with a three-round score of 209, which included a stunning five-under 66 opening round. Gonzalez bested that performance at the Bayou City Collegiate, carding a three-round score of 208 on the course that had a par of 216. His scores of 208 and 209 both landed in the program record book for lowest 54-hole individual score, ranking tied for 14th and 20th, respectively.

Women’s Golfer of the Month: Matilda Samervong, Lamar – Jr. – Linköping, Sweden (Birgittaskolan)
Through six rounds, Samervong leads the Cardinals with an average score of 74.5. She recorded a low-round score of 71 during the opening round of the Lady Clerico on Sept. 15. Samervong went on to capture the individual title at the Lady Clerico with a total score of 217 (71-73-73), becoming the first Cardinal to win an individual tournament title since 2023.
