FRISCO, Texas — Northwestern State's Taylor Spitzer, Ella Morgan and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Zoe Theriot have won this week's Jersey Mike's Southland Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week awards, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Offensive Player of the Week: Taylor, Spitzer – Jr. – F – Allen, Texas (Allen High School)
Spitzer scored six points in two wins this weekend, the most in the Southland Conference, scoring two goals and dishing out two assists. Of the five goals the Demons scored, Spitzer had her hand in four of them. She now leads the Southland Conference in points with 16, scoring six assists and dishing out four assists. Spitzer ranks in the top two in both categories in the conference stats.
Defensive Player of the Week: Emma Pethel, Northwestern State – Fr. – D – Canton, Ga. (Creekview High School)
Pethel lifted a defense that allowed just one goal combined against Lamar and UTRGV. Despite playing without a main starting defender against UTRGV, she blocked several shots and made saves near the goal line to keep opponents off the board. In addition to her defensive prowess, she recorded three assists on NSU's five goals in two wins to keep them in contention for the conference regular season title.
Goalkeeper of the Week: Sierra McCluer, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi – Sr. – GK – Forney Texas (Forney High School)
Theriot posted two wins on two shutouts for the Islanders, playing all 180 minutes in the net for the pair of road victories. This marks her third straight shutout victory and seventh on the season, which leads all Southland Conference goalies. Theriot made five saves through the two games to take her season total to 77.
