Islanders Surge into the Lead After Huge Second Round

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Three Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders shot under par as they shot an incredible 283 (-5) on Tuesday afternoon to surge into the lead at the Southland Women's Golf Championship.

The Islanders hold a 10-stroke lead over Augusta, who finished with a 301 (+13) on the afternoon. UIW made a move into third place with a second-round score of 296 (+8), while HCU (297) and Lamar (302) are tied for fourth.

East Texas A&M (296), UTRGV (299), and SFA (303) rounded out the team leaderboard.

The Islanders got three tremendous performances, including the low-round of the day from Samantha Gibbs, who finished with a 68 (-4), including an eagle on 14. Gibbs moved to seventh as she sits at 147 (+3) through two rounds.

Teammates Tristan Gabbard and Elsa Tornvall each shot a 70 (-2) on the day and both up into fourth place with a score of 145 (+1). Lucia Ramirez rounded out the Islanders with a two-round score of 149 (+5). 

Zoe Pinillos of Augusta continues to lead the way individually for Augusta, shooting a 72 (E) to move her total to 142 (-2) after two rounds of play. The Jaguars have two others in the Top 10 in Marine Legentil in seventh (147, +3) and Sara Adams in ninth (148, +4). 

Marie Baertz caught fire with seven birdies in the round, including four straight from holes 14-17 to finish with a 70 (-2) and sit in second place at 144 (E). Isabella Saenz of UIW joined Baertz in second after carding a 71 (-1) on the day.

Natcha Makmanee of HCU also produced a great round, shooting a 72 (E) and sitting in sixth place at 146 (+2). 

Joining Adams in ninth place at four over par are Lou Rousselot of HCU (76), Brooke Frerichs of Lamar (74), and Natalia Rodriguez Perez of UTRGV (76).

A champion will be crowned tomorrow as tee times are set for 7:40 a.m. with the final groups starting off at 9:20 a.m. Live coverage will begin on ESPN+ at 11 a.m.
