THIBODAUX, La. – The No. 2 seed Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks turned in one of their best performances of the year, dominating top-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to claim the 2025 Southland Women's Tennis Tournament Championship.
The Jacks claimed their first title since 2012 and only their second-ever tournament title. They will earn the conference's automatic qualification to the NCAA Tournament.
On this day, SFA was simply dominant from start to finish, starting the match by clinching the doubles point at Court 1, 6-4, behind Jemma Cave and Ana Paula Chavez, while Avery Kinsey and Ksenia Mamontova took the 6-4 victory at Court 2 for the 1-0 SFA lead.
The singles flight was all Ladyjacks as five of the six courts won their first set. SFA stayed locked in, and in the blink of an eye, was in position to clinch the title.
Sonja Rooth started it off by clinching Court 4 with a 6-1, 6-3 win, followed shortly by Antonella Taco with a 6-3 and dominant 6-0 win at Court 5.
Just minutes later, Chavez clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win to send the Ladyjacks into jubilation.
For A&M-Corpus Christi, it snaps an incredible streak of four consecutive titles.
Mamontova was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player for her two-match clinching singles wins and the doubles clinch in the championship match. Taco, Rooth, Cave, and Chavez joined Mamontova on the all-tournament teams. A&M-Corpus Christi's Leticia Tarocco and Kseniya Ramanouskaya also earned spots.
The Ladyjacks will find out their destination on the selection show on Monday, April 28 at 5 p.m.
