SFA Men, Northwestern State Women Atop Track & Field Team Standings After Day Two

HOUSTON — SFA men and Northwestern State women lead the field after the second day of the 2025 Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Holloway Field at Rice University. 

SFA held onto its first-place lead with an additional three events scored and tallied 17 more points on the day. The Lumberjacks have a total of 58 points, while UIW has 47 in second place. Lamar and Southeastern round out the top three tied with 33 points each. 

On the women’s side, Northwestern State women tallied 27.5 points on day two to take the lead over Lamar (47 points) and SFA (45 points).

The Demons brought home three gold medals and one bronze on the second day.

Northwestern State’s Raven-Symone Jarrett was the first to earn a medal with her first-place finish in the heptathlon.

Shakera Williams won the women’s shot put with a mark of 15.61m. Teammate Samari Finney also brought home gold in the long jump with a 6.33m jump, which is ranked No. 26 in the NCAA Division 1. 

Teodors Samar earned points for the Demons in the women's javelin throw and placed third in the event. 

UIW jumped from fourth to second place with a first place finish from Christopher Daniels in the 3000m steeplechase.  Ethan Malesich (3rd), James Butler (4th), Eric Pineda (7th) and Alexandre Fetizon (8th) also scored points for the Cardinals in the event.

SFA’s Zephirin Darhan earned silver in the men’s 3000m steeplechase, while teammate Wyatt Hoover placed fifth. SFA also scored points in the decathlon, shot put and long jump.

UTRGV’s Samantha Gonzalez won the women’s 3000m steeplechase in 10:33.31.

UIW’s Leo Chauchard won the decathlon with a total of 7,273 points to help push the Cardinals closer to the top of the standings. 

In men’s shot put, Marcus Francis of McNeese threw 18.84m to claim first place.

Justin Vincent of East Texas A&M won the men’s long jump in 7.55m, good for the 65th best jump in the Division I. 

Lamar’s Neelie Schiel and Cecile Bogliolo won first and second place respectively in the women’s javelin throw.

The final day of action begins tomorrow, May 16, at 3 p.m. CT with the women’s discus, women’s triple jump and men’s high jump. Events will be streamed on ESPN+ beginning at 5:00 p.m.
